National Research Council CNR
Institute of Chemical Methodologies IMC
Presentation
The Institute of Chemical Methodologies of the National
Research Council of Italy was formed in January 2002, by
the union
of 4 CNR
institutions internationally recognized for the past 30 years:
Chromatography Institute, Nuclear Chemistry Institute, Nuclear
Magnetic Resonance Service and the Center of Study on Reaction
Mechanisms (since the February 2003). The Institute is located
on the Research Area of Rome (Montelibretti) and in the University “ La
Sapienza ” of Rome . The Institute is not subdivided in research
divisions, but its scientific organization takes place through
7 functional departments (Units) . It is formed by more than
80 scientific operators (about 50 with university degree
and Ph.D. specialization level). The Institute is localized
in several buildings for a total surface of about 2700 square
meters and the laboratories are well functional for the operative
researches carried out in the different fields. The Institute
patrimonial level (scientific devices, instruments and accessories)
is greater than 8 millions of euro. Its annual budget is
greater than 1 million of euro (without considering the personnel
salaries). The Institute of Chemical Methodologies develops
its objectives in scientific fields well characterized from
the activities of the early ex-institutions, increasing the
basic knowledge and the possible applications with the following
chemical methodologies:
Chromatographic and electrophoretic methodologies
Gas-chromatographic methodologies
Industrial process methodologies
Mass spectrometric methodologies
Nuclear magnetic resonance methodologies
Radiochemical methodologies and radiation chemistry
Reaction mechanisms and chemical processes methodologies
The reached advanced level of basic knowledge in the above methodologies, has allowed the successful applications in the following fields (where the Institute finds its external economic support):
Food
Environment
Cultural heritage
Biomolecules, macromolecules and pharmaceuticals
The main scientific purposes of IMC are:
To realize an effective concentration of competencies and instruments in the discipline of the chemical methodologies useful to the applications toward other public and private research institutions.
To deep the knowledge of the chemical methodologies and the comprehension of the most important parameters which control their functionality.
To maintain the high quality of the know-how updating the relevant technologies.
To propose innovative methodological approaches, employing different chemical methodologies to solve some specific scientific requirements coming from other public and private research institutions.
To modify and calibrate the classic chemical methodologies, adapting them to the specific applications in different fields and with different cognitive problems.
